The Council pays an allowance to all councillors in recognition of the time they spend on council-related activities, including meetings. A special responsibility allowance is also paid to councillors who hold a position with additional responsibility (for example, a chairman of a committee).
Separate payments are made to members to cover travelling and subsistence costs to those meetings and training outside the borough which are recognised as being approved duties. The allowance given to the Mayor and Deputy Mayor falls outside the members' allowances scheme.
The Members Allowances Scheme for May 2019 - May 2020 is detailed in Part 6 of the Council's Constitution.
This Scheme has been agreed by Council having regard to the recommendations of an Independent Remuneration Panel convened in accordance with the Local Government Act 2000 and takes effect from 1 April 2018.
