Ian’s story…

My journey began in 1982 when I joined the Council as a refuse collector. Later that same year, I was promoted as a large goods vehicle driver. I loved the job, but it was all about to change… I was invited to attend a number of training sessions and whilst it did not fully dawn on me at the time, this was the start of my career in Team Management.

At first I was nervous about the training due to my dyslexia, but the Council were really supportive, encouraging and willing to invest in me and this allowed me to grow my skillset. I soon graduated from the Open University with a Management Degree, something I never imagined would be a possibility for me!

I’ve had a number of roles in my career here: Refuse Collector, Driver, Highway Drains Operative, Supervisor, Manager (to name only a few!) and now lead a team of over 100 staff as Head of Operational services.
The key to climbing the career ladder, for me, has always been about opening doors. Doors that people open for you and invite you to come through and sometimes doors you have to push through and open yourself. The supportive environment I have experienced at Epsom & Ewell Borough Council has truly helped me each step of the way.

The Council has a vision to make Epsom and Ewell “an excellent place to live and work” and for me, as a resident as well as an employee, they have fulfilled this in every way imaginable.
