Concessionary Fares England Wide Bus Travel
The Government passed legislation to extend the previous free bus travel concession in order to allow pass holders to travel without charge on all local buses within England, irrespective of where they reside in England.
You are eligible for a pass under the same rules as previously - i.e. if you are a resident in the borough and are either 60 years of age or over, or will be in the next three weeks, or if you have a recognised disability as shown below:
- are blind or partially sighted;
- are profoundly or severely deaf;
- are without speech;
- have a disability or injury with long-term effect that impairs your ability to walk;
- do not have arms or have long-term loss of both arms;
- have a significant learning disability
- are unable to obtain a driving licence due to physical impairment, other than persistent misuse of drugs or alcohol.
When can I travel?
The national guidelines are that you can travel free during off-peak hours which are 9.30am - 11.00pm Monday to Friday, and all day weekends and bank holidays.
All Surrey districts with the exception of Surrey Heath, have decided to allow aged pass holders to board buses in their Borough from 9.00am for free travel. Disabled pass holders can travel anytime within Surrey.
How do I apply?
Please complete a Free Bus Travel application form, for those eligible by reason of disability we provide a separate Disability Confirmation form to be completed by your Doctor.
You will need to provide a coloured photograph in the same size (45mm x 35mm) and format as that required for a passport application. This needs to be taken against a plain, light or white background, and show a close up of the holder's head and shoulders facing forward, looking straight towards the camera.
We will also require proofs of eligibility showing your date of birth and address e.g. a passport, current driver's licence or birth certificate plus a council tax or utility bill that is under 3 months old.
If you need someone to accompany you when you travel, we will require a letter from your Doctor to confirm this.
Completed application forms, together with proofs of eligibility and photograph, can be taken to the Town Hall or Bourne Hall between 9.00am and 5.00pm Monday to Friday.
