New - household battery recycling

Our weekly kerbside recycling collection now includes household batteries. See below for details of what to recycle, and how.

Weekly recycling made easy

Kerbside recycling makes it easy to recycle; we come to your house and collect the recyclables you leave out for us. All you have to do is to use your kerbside recycling box and bag and leave out the right materials on the right day each week.

Photo of kerbside box We collect every week, on the same day as your refuse collection.  Details of your collection day can be found using the 'My Epsom & Ewell' webpage.

When there is a Bank Holiday on a Monday, collections will be one day late.  If your normal collection day is Friday, your bin will therefore be picked up on the Saturday. Please note that we do work on Good Friday so collections will be as normal on that day.

Details of collections over Christmas and New Year 2009/10 will be advised nearer the time.

How and when should I leave my recycling out?

Please leave your recyclables in your kerbside box or bag at the edge of your property, next to your wheelie bin, by 6:30am on the morning of your collection. It is important that the box is clearly visible from the road.

  • Newspapers and magazines: To keep them clean, newspapers and magazines should be placed in your blue recycling bag (or in carrier bags if you do not use one). This ensures that they are acceptable to the company who actually recycle the material
  • Glass bottles, jars and cans: These should be rinsed before recycling. Please discard corks, caps and lids. Then simply place them together in your kerbside recycling box
  • Household batteries: These should be placed in a small, tied bag before being placed in your kerbside recycling box
  • Clothing and textiles: Most clothing, shoes etc go to charity, so should be kept clean and dry. To ensure this happens, please place them in a clearly labelled bag. Leave the bag in, or beside, your kerbside recycling box.

To report a missed recycling box or bag to us use our online form or telephone 01372 732000.  If your recycling container goes missing you can report it to us via our online form or telephone 01372 732000.

What can or cannot be recycled?

Please recycle:  Please DON'T recycle:
Newspapers and magazines: All white newspapers, all magazines (even glossies), brochures, catalogues, letters on white paper, junk mail, white envelopes, the yellow pages and white telephone directories. Non-white newspapers,  cardboard, greetings cards or non-white envelopes.
Glass bottles and jars: All colours of glass bottles and jars (please rinse before recycling and discard corks, caps and lids). Milk bottles, drinking glasses, window glass, Pyrex, light bulbs or ceramics.
Cans: All food and drinks cans, both steel and aluminium (please rinse before recycling but you don't need to remove labels). You can also recycle large biscuit/chocolate tins etc. Tin foil, paint cans or miscellaneous metal items such as pans or cutlery.
Household batteries: Only household batteries such as:

Rechargeable and non-rechargeable household batteries; AA, AAA, button and ‘square’ batteries; batteries from toys and household electrical equipment; battery packs from mobile phones; laptop batteries.
Car batteries.  These can be recycled at the 'tip' at Blenheim Road, Epsom.
Clothing: Clean clothing, shoes tied in pairs, belts, handbags, ties etc. Wet or heavily soiled clothes, single shoes, duvets.

Can I recycle shredded paper?

Yes. Shredded white paper is perfectly suitable for recycling.  But it can easily cause litter if not handled carefully. Please help us by observing the following:

  • Please ensure that shredded paper is bagged and securely tied before you leave it out.
  • If you know that the weather is likely to be very windy, please avoid putting shredded paper out for recycling, even if bagged and tied. Windblown bags can tear easily.

What if I have too much material for my recycling box?

An additional recycling box or bag can be obtained free of charge by calling us on 01372 732000, or alternatively you can email us.

What if I have difficulty moving my recycling box?

You can join our "pullout" service. Our collectors will then collect the box from beside your front door if you are finding it difficult to place it at the kerbside. To request this service, please call us on 01372 732000 or email us.

Kerbside recycling for flats

Using recycling boxes may be inconvenient for residents living in flats. As an alternative we can offer a "mini recycling centre". We currently have about 1,600 households benefiting from this kind of recycling.

Call us on 01372 732000 if you think that you would find this more suitable to your needs.
