Weekly recycling made easy

Kerbside recycling has made a huge impact on the amount of recycling we have done in the Borough since its introduction in 2003.  We now recycle just under a third of our total household waste.

Kerbside recycling makes it easy to recycle; we come to your house and collect the recyclables you leave out for us.  All you have to do is to use your kerbside recycling box and bag and leave out the right materials on the right day each week.

When do kerbside recycling collections happen?

We collect every week, on the same day as your refuse collection.  To find out which is your kerbside recycling/refuse day, email us or call us on 01372 732000.

When there is a Bank Holiday on a Monday, collections will be one day late.  If your normal collection day is Friday your bin will therefore be picked up on the Saturday.

Please Note: we do work on Good Friday so collections will be as normal on that day.

Christmas and New Year

Details of collections over Christmas and New Year 2008/09 will be shown here in December.

How and when should I leave my recycling out?

Please leave your recyclables in your kerbside box or bag at the edge of your property next to your wheelie bin by 7am on the morning of your collection.  It is important that the box is clearly visible so that we can see it easily.

  • To keep them clean, Newspapers & Magazines should be bagged in your blue recycling bag (or in carrier bags if you do not use one).  This ensures that loads are acceptable to the company who actually recycle the material.
  • Bottles, jars and cans should be rinsed first, but can be mixed together and simply placed in the box.  Please discard corks, caps & lids.
  • Clothing, shoes etc should be bagged separately and left by, or in, your box - most clothing goes to charity so should be kept clean and dry.

To report a missed recycling box or bag to us use our online form or telephone 01372 732000.

If your recycling container goes missing you can report it to us via our online form or telephone 01372 732000.

What can or can't be recycled?

Please recycle:  Please DON'T recycle:
Newspapers & Magazines: All white newspapers, all magazines (even glossies), brochures, catalogues, letters on white paper, junk mail and white telephone directories. Non-white newspapers, non-white telephone directories, cardboard, greetings cards or envelopes.
Glass bottles & jars: All colours of glass bottles and jars (please rinse before recycling and discard corks, caps & lids). Milk bottles, drinking glasses, window glass, Pyrex, light bulbs or ceramics.
Cans: All food & drinks cans, both steel and aluminium (please rinse before recycling but you don't need to remove labels). You can also recycle large biscuit/chocolate tins etc. Tin foil, paint cans or miscellaneous metal items such as pans or cutlery.
Clothing: Clean clothing, shoes tied in pairs, belts, handbags etc Wet, heavily soiled or oily clothes, single shoes

Can I recycle shredded paper?

Yes.  Shredded white paper is perfectly suitable for recycling.  However, please help us by observing the following:

  • Please ensure that shredded paper is bagged and securely tied before you leave it out.  Shredded paper can easily blow in the wind to cause a litter nuisance.  Securely bagging your shredded paper will help to avoid this happening.
  • If you know that the weather is likely to be excessively windy, please avoid putting shredded paper out for recycling, even if bagged and tied.  Windblown bags can easily tear, potentially causing a litter nuisance.

What if I have too much material for my recycling box?

An additional recycling box or bag can be obtained free of charge by calling us on 01372 732000 or email us.

What if I have difficulty moving my recycling box?

Elderly or disabled/infirm residents may either:

  • Join the "pullout" service.  Our collectors will then collect the box from beside your front door if you are finding it difficult to place it at the kerbside.
  • Request details of specialised recycling containers.  We have a range of options to choose from and will try to find a solution to suit you.

These services are subject to approval. To request either of them, please call us on 01372 732000 or email us.

Kerbside recycling for flats

Using recycling boxes may be inconvenient for residents living in flats.  As an alternative we can offer a "mini recycling centre".  We currently have about 1,600 households benefiting from this kind of recycling.

Call us on 01372 732000 if you think that you would find this more suitable to your needs.
