What is a "Bulky Item" of waste?
Bulky items are items of household waste which cannot fit into your wheelie bin due to size or weight. This may include such items as fridges, freezers, washing machines or furniture.
It may be possible to recycle furniture or large electrical goods - see below for details. If not, we can collect them from you for a fee.
Recycling furniture
Good quality furniture items (no electrical items) may be donated to the Vine Project to help local families and individuals on the lowest incomes.
For a donation of just £10, the Vine Project will collect a suitable item and donate it to local people in the greatest need.
The Vine Project is a charity organisation serving the local community to bring a positive change to people's lives and improve the quality of our environment.
To arrange a collection or make an enquiry, call the Vine Project on 020 8685 6640.
Recycling large electrical goods
You can donate good quality large electrical items (less than five years old and fully working) to help the British Heart Foundation raise funds to fight heart and circulatory disease, the UK's biggest killer. Suitable items are collected free within 48 hours.
To arrange collection, or make an enquiry, call the British Heart Foundation on 08444 994 174.
If I cannot recycle the item, how can I arrange collection by the Council, and when will it take place?
To arrange a collection by the Council, please call us on 01372 732000.
Collections take place within three working days from the date we receive payment and are made between 7am and 3pm. Unfortunately, we cannot confirm a specific time and date for collections (although we only collect fridges and freezers on Tuesdays because of special arrangements for disposal).
Please ensure that the items for collection are left on your property, outside but as close to the road as possible to make sure we can easily get at them. The items must be left ready for collection by 7am on the day after you request the collection.
How much will it cost?
The cost may vary dependent on the amount of waste you wish to dispose of. Contact us by email for details or call the Contact Centre on 01372 732000. Please note:
- Payments made by credit card are subject to a 1.5% charge
- If you wish to pay by cash or cheque in person at the Town Hall, from 1 December 2011 our cashiers office will be open between 10am and 2pm.

Where appropriate, we may need to provide an individual quote for unusual items or for the collection of large quantities of material. We will arrange to visit you to view the items if necessary.
Residents in receipt of certain means-tested benefits are entitled to three free collections per financial year.
Garden waste recycling
Large loads of garden waste can be collected on a recycling-only basis. A minimum amount of half a lorry-load applies. Costs are:
£121.00 for a half lorry-load
£245.00 for a full lorry-load
Please note: each request must be first assessed by our Operational Services department, and we must check that the material is not contaminated with non-recyclable items prior to loading it onto the vehicle. We will not be able to offer a collection service for garden waste unless it is uncontaminated and fully suitable for recycling.
For further information and to request the service, please call us on 01372 732000.
How can I pay?
Payments can be made by debit or credit card by telephoning 01372 732000, Monday to Friday between 9am and 5pm.
Alternatively, payments may be made in cash, by cheque or debit/credit card at the cashiers office in the Town Hall, from Monday to Friday between 10am and 2pm.
