Councillor Jan Mason, Chairman of the Council's Leisure Committee said:

“I find young people in Epsom & Ewell to be incredibly enthusiastic and active members of our community and this weekend they have done us proud!

“What a fantastic result!

“I am a passionate believer in the power that sport has to bring people together, build skills and strength of character and, of course, stay fit and healthy. By providing our young people with the opportunity to engage in a wide range of sports at an early age, I hope that their interest in staying fit will last well into adulthood.

“I would like to take this opportunity to thank all the Coaches who have given up their time to train and motivate the young people in Team Epsom & Ewell and to the parents and families who supported the team to victory!”

The Council's Leisure team had a superb response this year with a record 494 people who registered to take part in the free trials and coaching sessions organised by the Council in April, May and June.

The free training sessions for all sports were run by qualified coaches and the majority have direct links with local clubs' junior sections, offering youngsters who took part, a chance to get involved with a club on a more long-term basis.

More about the Surrey Youth Games...

The P&G Surrey Youth Games is an exciting festival of sport which attracts young people to play in a range of sports at a competitive level. The 11 Boroughs and Districts in Surrey compete against one another for the chance to claim the Overall Borough Trophy. It is a great opportunity for young people to make some new friends and try sports that they may have not have played before.

Qualified coaches run all sports, with the majority having direct links with local clubs with junior sections. The Games offer young people the chance to become connected with local sports clubs. The lucky ones who are chosen for the various sporting squads will be invited to some advanced training sessions leading up to the Games. This provides an opportunity to meet team mates, learn more about the sport, and profit from excellent coaching which will help to develop the skills required to do well in the Games.

There are also pathways in place to make sure that all young people involved with the Surrey Youth Games can make use of the close links established with local sports clubs and continue playing sport after the Games have finished. This includes participants who may not have been selected to represent the Borough in the Surrey Youth Games.

You do not have to be a competitor to be part of Team Epsom & Ewell! There are plenty of volunteer opportunities to get involved. This can include volunteering to support the competing sports teams from across the Borough. To find out more about the Surrey Youth Games please visit the Active Surrey website.
