The Surrey Youth Games will take place 21 and 22 June 2008 across venues in Guildford and Woking.

This Games, which is a truly celebratory grassroots event, will be the climax of months of training for the young people who compete against all 11 Borough & District Councils.  Young people who live or go to school in the Borough of Epsom & Ewell, are between the age of 7 & 15 years old are eligible to represent our Borough at the Games.  Last year 280 children enjoyed the benefits of our free tasters, trials and coaching sessions, which were organised within the Borough of Epsom & Ewell and begun in March.

The Games consist of 14 different sporting events including athletics, badminton, basketball, boccia (a game that is aimed at participants with disabilities, that is similar to bowls), fencing, football, futsal, hockey, judo, netball, tag rugby, squash, swimming and tennis.  Young people that are below county standard in any sport are encouraged to get involved in the event, and through the Games it is hoped that participants will continue to get involved in sports through the links formed with local sports clubs via their coaches and other members who have been running the training sessions.

A variety of different clubs help provide high quality coaching and these clubs include; Harriers Athletics Club, Epsom Rockets Basketball Club, Epsom Hockey Club, Sutton and Epsom Rugby Club, plus Ebbisham Sports Club provide coaching for both squash and badminton.

Last year the Borough of Epsom & Ewell (competing in lime green T-shirts, provided by GLL) won silver in the tag rugby, bronze in the senior U14 mixed tennis, bronze in the boys’ basketball and we came 4th in the senior netball and in the senior and junior squash.  These team successes were accompanied by 5 individual medals of silver and bronze in the judo competition.

Overall Epsom & Ewell came 7th out of 11 boroughs, an improvement for Surrey’s smallest Borough from 11th in 2006.  Our mascot, Dynamo Duck, also competed in the annual Borough Mascot Obstacle Race on the day of the Games and he won his heat and gained a silver medal in the final.

All participants in the Games are congratulated on their achievements at the annual Epsom & Ewell Presentation Evening, which is held at Bourne Hall.  The event is a celebration for all competitors and recognition of the hard work contributed by coaches and team managers, who kindly volunteer their time and commitment.

Further Information

All children are welcome to attend the training sessions even if they have not attended the 'trial' for that sport.  Squads for the games will be selected from those who register and attend a session before 16 May.  Children may attend training for more than one sport, but will be asked to choose which sport they would like to compete in.
