Over the 20 and 21 June 2009, nearly 200 children from the Epsom & Ewell Borough travelled to compete in the Surrey Youth Games. Epsom and Ewell entered 22 teams across 10 different sports, and were the Borough with the most teams entered for the second year running. Through a tremendous effort by all the young people, team managers and volunteers Epsom and Ewell finished fourth out of 11 boroughs! This is the Borough's best placing ever and is great result considering the Borough is the smallest in Surrey.
Participants of all ages and abilities took part across a variety of sports. These varied from judo, basketball, swimming, and squash. Epsom and Ewell’s squad performed extremely well and achieved success in a number of different sports at the Games;
1st Tag Rugby
2nd U9 Girls Football
2nd Swimming (Demonstration Sport)
3rd Junior Mixed Hockey
3rd Junior Girls Judo
3rd Boys Basketball
4th Senior Badminton
4th Girls Basketball
4th Boys Hockey
4th Senior Girls Judo
There were also individual successes in Judo, with participants winning 2 Golds, 2 Silvers and 4 Bronzes.
Epsom and Ewell's new mascot, Derby the Horse, also won the obstacle race.
Over 400 young people from across the Borough accessed the FREE coaching in the lead up to the Surrey Youth Games. All the participants battled for a prestigious opportunity to represent the Borough.
The Surrey Youth Games is a really exciting sporting event which allows young people of all ages to take part in a range of sports at a competitive level, against teams from the other 10 boroughs and districts of Surrey. It is a great opportunity to make some new friends and try your hand at some sports that you may not have played before.
Young people who live or go to school in the Borough of Epsom and Ewell and are between the age of 7 to 15 years old are eligible to represent the Borough at the Games.
Young people that are below county standard in any sport are encouraged to get involved in the event and through the Games it is hoped that participants will continue to get involved in sports through the links formed with local sports clubs via their coaches and other members who have been running the training sessions.
