Access
Elizabeth Welchman Gardens is situated in the southern half of the Borough with its only entrance off Downs Road, Epsom, just before the junction with Burgh Heath Road. There is no separate car parking facility. The park is open all year round but the paths are for pedestrians only and dog walkers and cyclists are not permitted.
Facilities
There is a hard surfaced path running around the perimeter. For those wanting peace and quiet and a chance to watch nature, this is a good site.
History
Elizabeth Welchman Gardens was given to the Borough in the will of Elizabeth Welchman on the 18th of October 1906. It is a small peaceful garden park, created out of an old chalk pit that was dug into what was once part of Epsom Downs. If you have any more information about the gardens or want to find out more about it, please contact Bourne Hall Museum on 020 8394 1734.
Volunteers & Community Groups
The Gardens are keenly supported by local residents and Councillors, who together form the Friends of Elizabeth Welchman Group. The group meets regularly and is committed to promoting conservation in the park and encouraging wildlife into the area. Another aim is to involve children with conservation projects, such as the recent bird, bat and hedgehog box building activity session, in order to educate them about the importance of nature conservation. The group was also incredibly successful in organising a "Party in the Park", in collaboration with Epsom Playhouse, in 2004. To take part in future activities, please contact the group's chairwoman Clare Hirsh.
Wildlife
There are many species of trees and plants, which provide habitats for animals, birds and insects. We are compiling a species list for the park so if you spot an animal, bird or plant of special interest, please email us describing your find.
