Epsom and Ewell has a rich and varied history. Records go back to the tenth century, when we appear in Anglo-Saxon charters. At first, Epsom and Ewell were manors, with lesser manors at Horton, Fitznells and Ruxley. Later on, administration passed to the parishes of Epsom, Ewell and Cuddington. Epsom Board of Health was founded in 1850 and in 1895 this was made an Urban District, while the other parishes formed part of the extensive Epsom Rural District. The union with Ewell took place in 1933 and was confirmed by the charter which created the Borough of Epsom & Ewell in 1937.
Accessing Records
Archives are kept at the Surrey History Centre in Woking: their website has excellent search facilities for researchers. Many organisations have entrusted their records to the History Centre, including the local churches, the Epsom Grand Stand Association, and the mental hospitals at the Manor, Long Grove, St. Ebba’s and West Park. Horton Hospital records are kept at the London Metropolitan Archives in London. Many schools have also sent their archives to the History Centre. The public school at Epsom College has its own archivist.
