Dust
Under the Environmental Protection Act 1990, dust from industrial and commercial premises can be considered a statutory nuisance. Environmental Health receives many complaints about dust, mostly from construction sites and attempts to deal with these informally wherever possible.
Dust emissions are also regulated from certain industries through a permit to operate under the Pollution Prevention and Control Act 1999. Please follow this link for more information on this area: Industrial Pollution.
Odour and Fumes
Odour and fumes from industrial, trade or business premises can also be considered a statutory nuisance under the Environmental Protection Act 1990.
The majority of complaints received are related to cooking smells from commercial kitchens and chemical odours from industry. We also receive a number of complaints concerning sewage and drainage odours. More information on drainage problems can be found on our drainage webpage.
