The Mayor’s Charities 2008/2009
The Butterfly Appeal
The Butterfly Appeal was founded in 1992 by Roy Richmond MBE, Honorary Freeman of the Borough of Epsom and Ewell, who wanted to see an improvement in the quality of life for cancer patients.
The Butterfly Centre at Epsom Hospital provides information and invaluable support for cancer patients and families. The Centre provides a friendly, attractive place for people to meet and chat with professionals. There is also the opportunity for them to enjoy aromatherapy treatments and holistic healing as well as formal medical care. The Butterfly Appeal has also been able to contribute to payment for the Macmillan nurses within the area.
Citizens Advice Bureau
The Citizens Advice service is a network of independent, local charities that helps people resolve their money, legal and other problems. It provides information and advice to everyone who needs it, and influences government and organisations to bring about changes in policies and laws that affect people's lives. We provide free, independent, confidential and impartial advice to everyone regardless of race, gender, disability, sexual orientation, age or nationality.
At the start of 2007, the burea had 5 part time paid staff (whose hours total less than 2 full-time equivalent staff); There are 41 volunteers, including trustees, advisers, administrative and support workers. Between them they work a total of 331 hours each week.
Epsom & Ewell Scouts
Scouting offers challenge and adventure to nearly 1,400 young people aged betwenn 6 and 25 involved in the five sections: Beavers, Cubs, Scouts, Explorers and Scout Network. In Scouting , young people are encouraged to take part in a wide range of activities as part of their programme. Scouts take part in a balanced programme that helps them find out about the world in which they live, encourages them to know their own abilities and the importance of keeping fit and helps to develop their creative talents. It also provides opportunities to explore thier own values and personal attitudes.
