Princess of Wales’s Royal Regiment exercise The Freedom of The Borough
On Tuesday 14 June, the soldiers of The 2nd Battalion of the Princess of Wales’s Royal Regiment paraded through the streets of Epsom as they exercised the Freedom of the Borough, granted to them on 5 January 2010.
The parade departed from Ashley Avenue and marched towards the Market Place where the Mayor of Epsom & Ewell, Councillor Sheila Carlson, inspected the troops, along with Brigadier Dennis and Brigadier Hood (deputising for the Lord Lieutenant) followed by a special Drum Head Service and Civic Presentations.
A total of 250 soldiers formed a marching procession along with the Minden Band and the Drums Platoon and continued through Epsom town centre to Rosebery Park where they held a short open air concert.
Mayor of Epsom & Ewell, Councillor Sheila Carlson said: “The parade looked splendid as it marched past and I am honoured that the Regiment agreed to parade through the town, exercising its Freedom of Entry into the Borough.
“I feel very proud that I have had the opportunity, during my time as Mayor of Epsom & Ewell, to be involved in such a special occasion.”
The Freedom of the Borough was awarded to the Regiment in recognition of their distinguished record, in acknowledgement of the Bond of Friendship and in appreciation and thanks for the Regiment’s contribution to the wellbeing of the local community.
