Council Tax Benefit is a means tested benefit that can help those with low incomes to meet the cost of their Council Tax.

Who can claim?

You may claim Council Tax Benefit if you pay Council Tax for the property you live in and receive other benefits, or are on a low income.  You may be able to claim Second Adult Rebate if you are not entitled to Council Tax Benefit on your own circumstances and have no partner but have other people over the age of 18 in the property who don't pay you rent but are on a low income.

Who will not qualify?

If you have savings that are over £16,000 you will not normally qualify for Council Tax Benefit.  However if you are of pensionable age and in receipt of Pension Credit, please contact us on 01372 732269 as you may still be eligible.

Most asylum seekers and people who are sponsored to be in the United Kingdom (UK) cannot get Council Tax Benefit.

If you are a full time student you will usually be exempt from paying Council Tax.

Other Rules

If you are under 60 and have savings over £6,000,  it will affect the amount of Council Tax Benefit you will receive.
If you are over 60 and have savings over £10,000, it will affect the amount of Council Tax Benefit you will receive.

If you have come to live in the UK within the last two years of your claim, it may affect Council Tax Benefit.

How is Council Tax Benefit worked out?

We will look at:

  • You and your partner's income, including earnings, some benefits, tax credits, maintenance payments and occupational pensions
  • You and your partner's savings
  • The ages and size of your family, whether you or any of your family are disabled and whether anyone who lives with you could help to pay towards the Council Tax.
