Appeals

If you have received a decision about Housing or Council Tax Benefit, you may need to know what you can do if you think it is wrong.

  • If you think the decision is wrong, you can ask us to explain it; we will provide you with a statement of reasons.
  • If you still think it is wrong after we have explained it to you, please request and submit an appeal form following the guidance notes on the statement of reasons. 
  • For some decisions, you can appeal to an independent tribunal who can change the decision if they agree that it is wrong.

There are time limits for asking for decisions to be looked at again and for appealing.  The appeal service may not be able to accept your appeal if it is received more than one month after the date on the decision letter.

They can only accept a late appeal if there are special circumstances that caused the delay; an explanation of these should be made when submitting the appeal.
