What should I do in an emergency?
It is a good idea to think how you and your family would respond during an incident.
If you find yourself involved in an emergency situation:
- Make sure 999 has been called if people are injured or there is a threat to life
- Do not put yourself or others in danger
- Follow the advice of the emergency services
- Try to remain calm, think before acting and try to reassure others
- Check for injuries, remember to help yourself before attempting to help others.
If you are not involved in the incident but are close by, or believe you could be at risk, in most cases the advice is GO IN, STAY IN, TUNE IN:
- Go inside a safe building
- Stay inside until you are advised to do otherwise
- Tune in to the local radio or TV for more public safety advice and information.
If you are at home and an emergency happens, try to get hold of the following:
- A list of useful telephone numbers. Visit our contact list on this website.
- Home and car keys
- Toiletries and any prescribed medication
- A battery radio with spare batteries (or a wind up radio)
- A torch with spare batteries (or a wind up torch)
- A First Aid kit
- Your mobile phone
- Cash and credit cards
- Spare clothes and blankets.
In certain, but very unlikely situations, you may be asked to leave your home by the emergency services. If this happens, leave as quickly and calmly as possible. Only if you have time:
- Turn off appliances if appropriate (eg oven)
- Lock all windows and doors
- Take the items listed above, especially medication, mobile phone and charger, house/car keys, cash/credit cards and list of useful numbers
- Contact family / friends to arrange to stay if possible
- To find out the latest situation listen to local radio / TV, or contact Epsom & Ewell Borough Council on 01372 732000.
