Do I need a Licence?
If you operate a business that provides horses for hire or for riding instruction, either for money or reward, then you must hold a riding establishment licence. Livery stables that only house and care for other people’s horses, however, do not need this licence.
Licences are issued under the Riding Establishments Act 1964 and are renewable annually.
Anyone operating a riding establishment must be suitably qualified or experienced and there are conditions attached to the licence to ensure the welfare and safety of the horses, riders and the public. The premises and accommodation must satisfy basic standards for the health, welfare and safety of the horses kept. We will arrange a veterinary surgeon's inspection to ensure the accommodation is suitable.
The licence will be issued subject to compliance with licence conditions and payment of the licence fee.
How do I apply?
You must complete and return the application form and send it to us, together with a copy of your Public Liability Insurance Policy and the current fee of £194.00 to the Town Hall, The Parade, Epsom, KT18 5BY. You will also be required to pay the costs incurred by the veterinary surgeon's inspection and will be invoiced for this separately.
